The Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea will feature fiber and textile demonstrations stitched from the heart during the Valentine’s Day month of February. All demonstrations are on Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
On Saturday, Feb. 4, Tonya Vance, of Lexington, will demonstrate how she felts wool and uses it to create bowls. Vance dyes Merino wool in bright colors and shapes it over various forms to create her felted vessels. Her felted ornaments and a variety of felted vessels are regularly available at the Center.
On Saturday, Feb. 11, Joette Dunn, of Falmouth, will demonstrate a variety of her stitched fabric creations. Starting with traditional patterned fabrics, Dunn creates a dye with walnut hulls and soaks her fabrics in this dye to give them an antique look. She creates ornaments, dolls and stitched pillows that are available at the center. Dunn’s works were used on the Center’s 2016 lobby Christmas tree.
Also on Feb. 11, the center will offer two free gallery tours of the exhibits “Have a Seat: Chairs by Kentucky Artisans” and “Reveal: Don Ament and Joyce Garner” at 11 a.m. and again at 2 p.m.
On Saturday, Feb. 18, Shawnna Southerland, of Berea, will use her sewing machine to stitch fiber covered coils of clothes line into bowls and place mats. Southerland learned to sew as a young girl and loves how the fabric evolves from a flat piece into something three-dimensional and unique.
On Saturday, Feb 25, three members of the Berea Welcome Center Carvers will demonstrate their skills at the center. Members hail from all over Central Kentucky and demonstrate every month at the Center, sharing their stories and woodcarving skills with visitors.
